SKI SERVICE

Our ski service department has always been known for its quality and its ability to produce world class tunes. The Startingate caters to the racer, competitive freestyler and alpine snowboarder, but loves to put the recreational skier and snowboarder on quality tune ups that enhances their skiing and riding. Our top of the line machinery is from Wintersteiger and Montana and is kept in flawless condition. We run two stone grinders, the Montana Crystal Inline for preliminary grinding to achieve flat ski bases and edge levelness and the legendary Winterstiger RS 350 to inlay podium winning structures. The two machine process came to us through nessesity. Over the years we came to the conclusion that Winterstiegers ability to produce remarkable grind patterns for ultimate speed and turning ease was unsurpassed but could not get skis flat without marring the soft race stones surface and flawing the skis base pattern. Montanas approach to grinding is totally different. the Montana runs bigger motors, more down pressure and a stone composite that cannot only cut the steel edge and the base simontaneousley but can take todays wide skis that have inhereted cupping and cut them perfectly flat without stone disfiguration. These skis will now work as designed and will perform better than new. We are the only shop that we know of that uses the two machine process. Having a flat ski is the basis of a great tune. Edge bevels are more accurate making the skis react with a predictability and edge grip that has to be experienced to believe. HEY MIKE, Flat skis are not over rated. (Inside joke between us tuners!!)

SKI TUNING SERVICE RATES

Its Simple at the Startingate. We charge our hourly rate of $60 per hr. for tuning. Recreational skis average 45 to 80 min. ($45 to $80) with the average tune being $60. Rate differences are due to time spent on base repairs (plastic welding, patching and extruding), excessivley worn bases and edges (huge base bevels worn in from skiing on abrasive snow or infrequent tuning which require extended grind times) and other repairs. If you ski in the woods on rocks and roots expect higher charges than the frontside skier who occasionally tunes their skis and sticks to good cover.

RACE SKI SERVICE

Race skis get our same service charge ($60hr.). Race ski tuning time averages 55 to 100 min. ($55 to $100). Again repairs and over worn skis play a significant role in time spent tuning. The typical race ski charge is $80. This includes the 2 machine process along with hand cutting the bevels and polishing, sidewall preperations if requested, multiple hot scrapes and race wax preperations. Attention is paid to the fine details that bring speed to your skis. Note: We are available for grinds only. Average time 15 to 30min. ($15 to $30) . This is where a racer prefers to do all the other ski preperation steps themselves. This does include the base bevel though as we cannot get the Winterstieger structure into the base without first relieving the base edge.

Repairs: $60.00 per hr. We can do just about anything as far as repairs. Delams, base patch inserts, edge replacements, plastic welding and extruding, etc. Send or bring us your broken and we will give you an estimate.

Racers and Pros can usually be sold immediately from our pro stock and have all their fitting done the same day 25 years ago Startingate opened its doors with bootfitting as its main focus. We have remained cutting edge in our field and have developed a unique method of selling and fitting our boots.
